"Black Swan" Causes Controversy About Influence on Teen Girls

The newly released film, Black Swan, has caused much controversy and argument about the message it has sent to teen girls. An interesting article on a website that embraces plus size beauty, plus-size-tall.com, expresses outrage at the new film and even goes as far as to refer to the plot as "eating disorder porn." This contents and opinions of this article are a prime example of how the media can deeply affect the mind set of teenage girls when it comes to perceived beauty. The film describes a story about a woman striving to become a ballerina, something merely all of us girls once destined to be; this aspect of the movie creates a situation which one can relate to which further deepens the influence on girls. The article infers that "the glamorous life of the ballerina portrayed on the screen who is anorexic and bulimic could add one more trigger to the pressure of teen girls to be a certain size." Starring actress, Natalie Portman, confesses she was asked to lose a whopping twenty extra pounds off of her already thing figure and states that she does not recommend such extremes. Natalie explains that such eating patterns are common among ballerinas and goes on to address this issue, however, her featured movie has already caused enough damage. So now I am going to ask you, do you think the newly released film Black Swan is a negative influence on teen girls? Or even further, do you think this film goes as far as being classified as "eating disorder porn?"

  1. I have seen the movie Black Swan twice, and now that I really think about it I agree that the movie can have a negative influence on teen girls. When you said that all girls probably dreamed of being a ballerina at some point, I completely agree with you, and this movie is nothing but a negative portrayal of ballerinas. The movie shows multiple scenes of the main character making herself sick or refusing to eat, so I can definitely see where this website gets the feeling that the movie is affecting teen girls negatively. Even though I liked the movie, I agree that it has had many negative impacts and think that the information from plus-size-tall.com is very interesting.

  2. Black Swan is not the frist movie to display ballerina in the eating disorder limelight. If i remember correctly, Center Stage covers this same issue. A lot of individuals in the business have admitted to the extreme measures they have gone when it comes to weight. Countless of movies have covered this issue, and it is unfortunate. But as upsetting it is, I have seen Black Swan and in no way do i think it glamorizes the weight issues associated with professional dancers. I can see how this website is upset by the physical body images portrayed in this movie. All of the female leads are extremely thin, but I believe the extremes as to which their bodies are presented are for the scene of the films. The film shows the downward spiral these obsessions go. Hollywood does have the reputation of putting stick thin females in the spot light, and I am sure they will continue to receive criticism because of it.
